Kerning allows you to adjust spacing between text characters so they fit together better. Kerned text is often more legible than text that hasn’t been kerned. If you’re not satisfied with the way text appears, you can manually adjust the kerning.
Step 1
Choose 100% (Cmd-1) from the View menu to provide the most accurate text display for checking kerning.
Step 2
Select a text object, then choose Edit Text (Cmd-E) from the Edit menu.
Step 3
Drag to highlight the characters you want to kern in the text entry box or click to place the insertion point between two characters.
Step 4
Hold down the Option key and press the right arrow key to kern the letters farther apart.
• Hold down the Option key and press the left arrow key to kern letters closer together.
Step 5
To remove manual kerning, select the kerned characters, hold down the Option key and press the up arrow key.
